Collection contains correspondence with influential Auburn University officials. Several items relate to a wide range of activities that involved the Alumni Association, the Development Program, and/or Sarver because of his position: outreach efforts to Auburn alumni, emergency funding campaign in late 1950s, Sarver's (sometimes covert) role re: AU integration, relations between Alumni Association and AU athletic department. Also contains materials on Sarver's involvement with Veterans of Foreign Wars, including anti-communism activities and efforts to establish a VFW Library Memorial Fund.

East Alabama Male College, sponsored by the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, was chartered in May 1856. Classes opened in 1859 in Auburn, Alabama, but the college closed during the Civil War. Reopening in 1866, the college became a land-grant institution in 1872 and changed its name to Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama.
